Mój współlokator i guru muzyczny w jednym podwoził mnie ostatnio do pracy i mówi: "puszczę ci coś, a ty zgaduj co to jest". Słucham, słucham... początkowe lekkie gitarowe riffy nabierają na ostrości, pojawia się mocna perkusja i niemal wściekły głos wokalisty... skojarzyło mi się to z jakimś projektem Mike'a Pattona, albo stoner rockiem w stylu Kyuss czy QOTSA, ale po chwili rozpoznałam ten głos - toż to Foo Fighters!
Dave Grohl zapowiadał, że planuje nagrać najcięższy album w karierze zespołu i zdecydowanie mu się to udało. Zespół zrezygnował z łagodniejszego, niekiedy balladowego grania na rzecz mocnych, garażowych riffów z pogranicza punka, a nawet metalu. W otwierającym płytę "Bridge burning", a także takich numerach jak "Arlandria" i "Back & forth" można znaleźć zdecydowanie wpływ współpracy z Homme'm i Jonesem w Them Crooked Vultures. Spokojniejsze granie można znaleźć w "These days" czy "I should have known" (z Novoselikiem!), które jednak zostaje przełamane także przez mocniejsze fragmenty.
Największym zaskoczeniem płyty jest dla mnie "White Limo", którego nie powstydziłby się pewnie niejeden typowo metalowy zespół - tu przy akompaniamencie typowo hardrockowych riffów przesterowany głos Grohla kojarzy mi się ze starym dobrym Faith No More (i muzycznym guru mojego guru :). Kolejnym zaskoczeniem związanym z tym kawałkiem jest dla mnie teledysk - głupawe miny członków zespołu wożonych po mieście przez Lemmy'ego wyglądają mi trochę jak powtórka z "Big me".
Podsumowując - siódemka zdecydowanie jest szczęśliwym numerem dla Foo Fighters - serwują swoim fanom coś nowego, odmiennego, ale jednocześnie wciąż na dobrym, wysokim poziomie.


My flatmate, who is also my music guru, drove me one day to work and said: "I'm gonna play you some music, guess who this is". So I'm listening, listening... the guitar riffs start getting heavier, strong drums come up and somehow "pissed off" voice of the singer... various things came on my mind, like one of Mike Patton's project or some stoner rock like Kyuss or QOTSA, but suddenly i recognized that voice - it was Foo Fighters!
Dave Grohl announced that he was planning to record the heaviest album in his band's history and he totally made it. The band gave up the easy-going sound, sometimes sounding like ballads and went off with hard garage riffs in punk or even metal style. In the opening track "Bridge burning", but also in songs like "Arlandria" and "Back & forth" you can definitely hear the influence of working with Homme and Jones in Them Crooked Vultures. The calmer tracks like "These days" or "I should have known" (with Novoselic!) are also being broken by harder moments.
The biggest surprise on the album is for me "White Limo, a track which could be easily recorded by any typical metal band - accompanied by hardcore riffs, Grohl's overdriven voice reminds me of the good old Faith No More (and my guru's guru :). Another surprise is the video to the song - silly faces of the band members driven around the city by Lemmy looks a bit like another "Big me" story.
All in all - number seven is definitely a lucky numer for the Foo Fighters - they give their fans something new and different, but still good and on a high level as always.
