Gratisfaction

Czekanie na nową płytę Strokes'ów zdecydowanie się opłaciło. Jules, Albert, Fab, Nick i Nikolai wracają z mocnym, ciekawym albumem, choć znacznie różnym od poprzednich. Zdecydowanie potrzeba kilkukrotnego przesłuchania, żeby wyrobić sobie o nim zdanie. Odpalam zatem odtwarzacz raz jeszcze i przystępuję do spisywania przemyśleń.
Otwierające "Machu Picchu" w początkowych nutach przywodzi na myśl solowy projekt Juliana, żeby w refrenie przejść gładko w "tradycyjnie" Strokesowe granie, ale jednak z jakimś takim nowym, oryginalniejszym brzmieniem. Strokesowe granie zdecydowanie udziela się także w singlowym "Under cover of Darkness" i wyśmienitym "Gratisfaction".
Mimo iż jest kilka spokojniejszych piosenek, udaje im się utrzymać wysoki poziom, np. dzięki dobrym riffom w solówce w "Two kinds of happiness" (które swoją drogą trochę przywodzi mi na myśl "Electricityscape") czy "Taken for a Fool".
Najsłabiej na płycie wypadły moim zdaniem "Call me back" i "Life is simple in the Moonlight" - może są trochę zbyt spokojne, a może to ja spowodowana dlugim czekaniem oczekiwałam "kopa" na miarę "absolutamente genial" debiutu.
Zawodzi trochę głos Juliana, który stał się gładszy i spokojniejszy - na poprzednich płytach dało się usłyszeć jego charakterystyczny pazur, którego tutaj mi trochę brakuje.
Ogólnie płyta zadowala mój strokesowy głód - kilka piosenek zdecydowanie wyląduje na liście ulubionych hitów, a ja sama czuję się "ugratysfakcjonowana" :)

It was definitely worth waiting for the new Strokes' album. Jules, Albert, Fab, Nick & Nikolaiare back with a strong, interesting album, although it's a lot different from the previous ones. You really need to listen to it a few times to set your opinion about it. That's why i push PLAY on my player again and start writing my opinions.
The first tones of the opening, "Machu Picchu", remind me of Julians solo project, but around the refrain it changes into the "tradicional" Strokes' sounds, but with something new and original in it. The "Strokes' sound" is definitely to find in the single "Under cover of darkness" as well as in the delightful "Gratisfaction".
Even though there are some calmes songs, they keep the high standards, like the solo riffs in "Two kinds of happiness" (wich reminds me a bit of "Electricityscape") and "Taken for a fool".
The weakest parts of the album are in my opinion "Call me back" and "Life is simple in the Moonlight" - maybe they're a bit too calm and still, or maybe it's just me, who was so tired of waiting and anticipation that I expected an album with the same "kick" as their absolutamente genial debut.
I'm a bit dissapointed with Julian's voice, wich became smoother and more quiet - it was more agressive on the previous albums and I really miss it.
All in all, the album satisfied my Strokes hunger - some of the songs are definitely gonna make my top hits list, and I myself feel "gratisfied" :)

Pozostając jeszcze w klimacie indie-rockowej garażowej rewolucji, warto wspomnieć o solowym albumie wokalisty Strokes'ów - Juliana Casablancasa. Jako że panowie na swój kolejny album kazali czekać ponad 5 lat, z radością sięgnęłam po wydane pod koniec 2009 roku "Phrases for the Young".
Liczyłam na to, że mój głód strokesowego grania zostanie zaspokojony, jednak czekało mnie spore zaskoczenie - tu jakieś keyboardy, gdzieniegdzie trochę elektroniki, czasem rytmy rodem z popu lat 80. Nawet głos Juliana brzmi jakoś inaczej. Jeżeli dodamy do tego jeszcze kolorowy i dynamiczny teledysk do singlowego "11th dimension", można odnieść wrażenie, że jest to płyta zupełnie innego artysty niż "zbawcy garażowego grania".
Niemniej, mimo iż zaskakujący, album pozostawia bardzo pozytywne wrażenie. Jak sam Casablancas stwierdził, chciał zrobić wszystko to, na co nie mógł sobie pozwolić w The Strokes - stąd dźwięki nie kojarzące się w ogóle z tą grupą. Muzyka jest lżejsza, może bardziej radosna, nie jest jednak w żadnym wypadku płytka - Jules jak zwykle pokazał, że potrafi tworzyć muzykę i pisać teksty (jak choćby te w otwierającym płytę kawałku "Out of the blue", czy łamacze języka w "River of brakelights", aż do mojego ulubionego wersu forgive them even if they are not sorry w "11th dimension").
Podsumowując, głód i tęsknota za Strokesami pozostaje, ale cieszę się, że poznałam Juliana od innej, też bardzo ciekawej strony. Cieszy mnie, gdy artysta decydując się na solowy projekt robi coś swojego, innego, gdyż często zdarza się, że solowy album jest po prostu takim samym graniem co z zespołem, tylko z innymi muzykami. Julesowi zdecydowanie udało się pójść własną ścieżką.

Staying in the indie-rock-garage-revolution mood, it's worth to mention the solo album of the Strokes' frontman - Julian Casablancas. Since the guys made us wait 5 years for their new album, i was happy to put my hands on the "Phrases for the Young" album, released end of 2009.
I was hoping that my starving for the "strokes' sound" will be satisfied, but there was a big surprise waiting for me - some keyboards, a bit of electronics, some rhythms from the 80s pop songs... Even Julian's voice sounds a bit different. If you add to it the colors and dynamic of the video to the single "11th dimension", you can have a feeling that this album comes from someone completely other than the "saviour of garage rock".
Even though it's a surprise, the album leaves a very positive impression. As Casablancas stated himself, he wanted to do all the things he wasn't able to accomplish with The Strokes - that's why we get the sound totally different from the group's. The music is somehow lighter, more joyful, but not plain - Jules shows again that he's capable of making good music and writing good texts (like in the opener "Out of the blue", a tongue-twisting "River of brakelights", up to my favourite line forgive them even if they are not sorry in "11th dimension").
To sum up, my Strokes hunger remains, but I'm happy I got to know a different and very interesting side of Julian. I'm glad that when an artist goes solo, he makes something different, something totally on his own, because it happens sometimes that a solo project is just the same music played with other musicians than usual. Jules definitely managed to go his own way.

Całkowicie przypadkiem natknęłam się w telewizji na teledysk do "You only live once" - urzekła mnie prostota teledysku i to, że wszyscy muzycy mieli fajne fryzury i oczywiście trampki :) Mimo to, na pewien czas zapomniałam o tym "tajemniczym, fajnym zespole", aż 2 lata temu, przygotowując materiały do magisterki natknęłam się na artykuł w "Teraz Rocku" - "New Musical Express ogłosił, że The Strokes zmienią twoje życie. (...) Rolling Stone nazwał ich królami rocka i to na okładce. Mówią też o nich zbawcy rocka". Zabierając się do lektury, spojrzałam na zdjęcie i pierwsze co zauważyłam to dłuuugaśne stopy Juliana w TRAMPKACH! :) zaraz po przeczytaniu zabrałam się za szukanie albumów tego "wielkiego objawienia" - to co usłyszałam powaliło mnie na kolana!
"Is this it?" było pierwszą płytą W OGÓLE, która spodobała mi się od początku do końca, każda jedna piosenka. zazwyczaj mam tak, że mimo iż bardzo lubię i szanuję dany zespół, zawsze przynajmniej jeden utwór mi nie pasuje, nudzi mnie lub po prostu go nie lubię. w przypadku The Strokes pokochałam każdą jedną piosenkę z miejsca i bezgranicznie!
"Room on Fire" i "First Impressions of Earth" także mnie nie zawiodły. często słyszę opinie, że trzecia płyta Strokesów nie umywa się do genialnego debiutu, że poza singlowym "You only live once" i dwiema kolejnymi piosenkami nie ma na niej nic interesującego. Zdecydowanie się nie zgadzam - można na tym albumie znaleźć kilka niedocenianych perełek z moim ulubionym "Ize of the World" na czele.

Najnowsza płyta - "Angles" ukazała się pod koniec marca. Nie miałam jeszcze okazji jej przesłuchać, choć singiel "Under Cover of Darkness" obiecuje powrót do starej formy. Mam nadzieję, że i tym razem nie zawiodę się na Julianie i spółce.

I remember when I totally accidentaly came across the video to "You only live once" on TV - Iwas mesmerized by the simplicity of the clip, the great haircuts of the band members and, of course, their sneakers :) in spite of that I forgot for a few years about the "mysterious, cool band", till 2 years ago, when I was completing material for my master's thesis, i stumbled upon an article in "Teraz Rock" - "New Musical Express announced that The Strokes will change your life. (...) Rolling Stone named them the kings of rock on their cover. People tend to call them the saviors of rock". When I started reading the article I looked at the picture and noticed Julian's looong feet in THOSE SNEAKERS! :) just after I finished reading i started looking for albums of those "great revelation" - what I've heard brought me on my knees!
"Is this it?" was the first album EVER that I liked from the beginning to the very end. I usually have this problem, that even though I like and cherish a band, there's always at least one song that I don't like or that just bores me. With The Strokes I fell in love with every single song forever!
"Room on Fire" and "First impressions of Earth" didn't dissapoint me aswell. I often use to hear opinions that the 3rd Strokes album is nothing compared to their great debut, that besides the single "You only live once" and two next songs, there's nothing interesting on it. I absolutely disagree - you can find there some underestimated treasures, just like my personal favourite "Ize of the World" for example.

Their newest album - "Angles" came out end of march. I didn't have the opportunity to listen to it yet, though the single "Under cover of Darkness" is a nice promise of coming back to shape. I hope that this time also I won't be disapointed by Julian & co.
